2024-07-29: Italian thoroughbreds headline the Gooding Pebble Beach auctions ...
The Monterey car week is only three weeks away and the first complete auction catalogs have been published. Californians Gooding were first with their two-day Pebble Beach Auctions. The 186-lot sale is headlined by a selection of Italian thoroughbred road and racing cars. Our eye was particularly caught by this Ferrari 333 SP, which was raced with great success in North America and also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was raced by three prominent teams, including Gianpiero Moretti's MOMO Corse. Today chassis 010 still wears the striking MOMO colours and the glorious howl of its Formula 1 derived V12 was most recently heard during the 2023 Le Mans Classic. It comes with a $6 - $8 million pre-sale estimate.Another V12-engined Ferraris set to make headlines during the Pebble Beach Auctions is this Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider. Sold new to Switzerland, it combines desirable features like covered headlights and factory hard-top. Ferrari Classiche certified, this coveted California Spider should sell for over $15 million. In the news for all the wrong and then all the right reasons has been this Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider. In 2022, it was stolen together with a truck and trailer from a hotel parking lot but fortunately, this priceless machine was retrieved mostly unscathed little over a year later. One of five produced, this great example of the iconic pre-War supercar, it had been part of the great Oscar Davis collection for many years. Now offered by the insurance company that took ownership after it was retrieved, the Touring Spider is the most valuable car in the Gooding roster with a $16 - $20 million estimate. |
2024-07-25: New Corvette ZR1, Cadillac concept and Aston Martin Hypercar out testing ...
The much anticipated C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has broken cover. It is the new range-topping model and in order to properly benchmark it, General Motors reportedly acquired a Ferrari SF90 Stradale and a Porsche 911 GT2. The result is a mid-engined supercar equipped with the most powerful road-going V8 ever produced by General Motors. This twin-turbo 5.5-litre 'LT7' produces a staggering 1,067 bhp and allows the Corvette to complete a quarter-mile run in under 10 seconds. The revised aerodynamics package is capable of producing as much as 1,500 pounds of downforce at speed. The ZR1 is available as a Coupe and a Convertible.Another new General Motors machine unveiled this week is the Cadillac Sollei Concept. It is effectively the drop-top version of the all-electric Celestiq Coupe. Although currently still in concept form, it seems only a matter of time the Sollei will join the hand-built Celestiq in limited production. Ahead of its competition debut next year, Aston Martin began track-testing the new Valkyrie LMH with Darren Turner, Mario Farnbacher and Harry Tincknell sharing the driving duties. The Valkyrie LMH is equipped with a revised aerodynamics package and will be powered by a de-tuned version of the screaming Cosworth-built V12 engine. |

2024-07-22: 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed report and 210-shot gallery ...
One of the absolute highlights on the calendar each year is the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Held around the Goodwood House, right in the middle of one of England's most beautiful areas, the annual event is a celebration of motoring past, present and future both on two and four wheels. This very fact was highlighted this year with the main theme 'Horseless to Hybrid' that covered the period from the dawn of motoring right through to the present time. Other special features included 100 years of MG, Shadow Racing, Niki Lauda and Joest Racing. As always, the event also included a Bonhams auction and the Cartier Style & Luxe Concours d'Elegance. Our reporters were at Goodwood House for all four days and have carefully curated a 210-shot gallery with highlights from the Concours d'Elegance and all the action up the hill. It serves to illustrate a detailed report. As always, you can expect more in-depth features of some of the cars that starred at Goodwood in the near future. |
2024-07-18: Supercars from the 1990s at the Louwman Museum and latest news ...
From July 5th, the entrance hall of the Louwman Museum has been filled with Supercars from the 1990s. Inspired by the posters that lined many bedroom and garage walls, twelve supercars were carefully curated. Among the star cars on display are the Toyota GT-One road car and the only Nissan R390 in private hands. The Supercars from the 1990s will run through to September 1st at the The Hague museum. One of the most interesting cars that featured at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed was the Auto Union Type 52. Powered by a mid-engined V16 engine, it has been built recently using period Ferdinand Porsche drawings. Clearly inspired by the legendary Grand Prix cars, the Type 52 would have been one of the very first supercars had it been built. Another world debut revealed at Goodwood was the Polestar BST, which previews a high-performance version of the Polestar 6 sports car. We were also at Goodwood and are currently preparing our in-depth coverage with what promises to be a spectacular set of images. |

2024-07-15: Porsches and Mercedes to headline RM Sotheby's Tegernsee auction ...
As part of next week's Tegernsee Concours d'Elegance, RM Sotheby's will host a live auction that is fittingly headlined by a pair of Porsches and a Mercedes-Benz. The most valuable car to cross the block in the Southern most tip of Germany is this Porsche 550 RS Spyder. It was sold new to Portugal and extensively raced around Europe. It was restored on behalf of the family of the second owner by Porsche between 1992 and 1994 and retains the original engine, gearbox and chassis. Rarely seen since the restoration was completed, 550-0038 has a pre-sale estimate of €3.5 - 4.2 million.A more modern racing Porsche consigned to the sale is this 935 that was raced at Spa in 2019. It features a striking Carrera Toys livery and not surprisingly a commemorative model was made of this very car. Sparingly used since the 2019 season, the 935 should sell for over €1 million. Although it is 15 years old, this Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 'Stirling Moss' is effectively brand new. Painted in a special-order silver, it has been consigned with a mere 45 km on the odometer. The tribute to the great, late Stirling Moss is estimated to sell for €3.2 - 3.8 million. |
2024-07-11: 2024 24 Hours of Spa report and 140-shot gallery ...
Two weeks ago we were at the Circuit Spa Francorchamps to celebrate the centenary of the 24 Hours of Spa. Run since 2001 for GT cars, the event also has a rich history as a touring car race. To mark the 100th anniversary of the race, the regular program was complemented by the Peter Auto Endurance Racing Legends and Heritage Touring Cup. Further support acts that warmed up the nearly 100,000-strong crowd were races for the European GT2 and GT4 series and also the McLaren Trophy. The race started at 16:30 on Saturday afternoon and had more than its fair share of drama culminating in last minute drama for one car and a historic victory for another. Our photographers were on hand in time to capture the famous parade around the old track and into the town of Spa. This is included in the 140-shot gallery that covers all the grids and accompanies a brief recap of the centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Spa. |

2024-07-08: Bonhams Festival of Speed preview with works Aston and two Ferrari supercars ...
One of the set fixtures of the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed is the annual Bonhams auction. Consigned as one of the absolute stars to cross the block is this iconic Aston Martin DB2 Team Car. It is one of five DB2s produced by Aston Martin specifically for racing. It was raced by the likes of Stirling Moss, Roy Salvadori, Tony Rolt and Peter Collins in period and was later part of the fabulous Leyba collection for many years. Offered from a 14-year single ownership, chassis LML/50/9 is a Goodwood regular and was raced during the 2018 Revival by Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner. The most valuable car on offer is this Ferrari LaFerrari that was sold new to the United Kingdom. It was well specced but only rarely used by its current custodian. It was consigned with 1,430 miles on the odometer and 206287 is now expected to sell for £2,800,000 - 3,400,000. Another low-mileage Ferrari on offer is this 488 Pista. It is the rare Piloti version, which was available only to Ferrari Challenge and XX Programme drivers. Not quite in keeping with its name, 250957 had only covered 100 mile at the time of consignment. |
2024-07-05: 24 Hours of Le Mans recap and one-off Pagani ...
Endurance racing is in a great place right now as highlighted by this year's edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The legendary twice-round-the-clock race featured a capacity grid with nine manufacturers competing in the top category, while the likes of Ford, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Lamborghini, BMW and Aston Martin were all in the running for the new LMGT3 category. Despite hampered at times by tempestuous weather, it turned out to be an incredibly close race with a record-breaking nine cars finishing on the lead lap. Our friend Bob van der Wolf was at Le Mans during the race week and he has returned with an 80-shot gallery for our brief race recap. The latest one-off produced by Pagani is this Huayra Epitome. Fittingly named, it combines an uprated twin-turbo V12 engine with a manual seven-speed gearbox. The revised engine is good for 851 bhp and 1,100 Nm of torque in this configuration. In addition to the improved mechanical package, the Epitome is also fitted with revised front and rear bumpers to give it a truly distinct appearance as well. |

2024-07-01: Wild Aston Martin Valiant track car, new M5 and Continental GTC Speed ...
One of the perks of being an Aston Martin works driver is that you have the ear of the company's engineers. Fernando Alonso made the most of this status when he requested the development of a track-ready version of the Valour concept cars. Dubbed the Valiant, it boasts more power and a more extreme body package but the H-pattern, six-speed manual gearbox has been retained. Production of the Valiant is limited to just 38 examples and all have been spoken for. It will officially break cover at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next week.Another world debut set to hit the hill is the all-new BMW M5. It is the first M5 powered by a hybrid drivetrain, which consists of a twin-turbo V8 and an electric motor mounted in the eight-speed automatic gearbox. Thanks to a 717 bhp system output and all-wheel drive, the new M5 will boasts sufficient performance despite the hefty unladen weight of 2,435 kg. At this weekend's Spa 24 Hours, BMW announced the details of the BMW M4 GT4 Evo. The work has focused on reliability and improved drivability compared to the current model. Existing customers can acquire an upgrade package, while the M4 GT4 Evo is also available as a complete car. Along with the Continental GT Speed, Bentley have revealed the drop-top Continental GTC Speed. Both feature a hybrid drivetrain that can produce up to 771 bhp and 1,000 Nm of torque. |
