2018-09-28: Porsche 935 reborn and the latest Paris releases ...
Porsche 935 At this weekend's Rennsport Reunion, Porsche celebrate the company's 70th anniversary in great style. To mark the occasion, the German manufacturer revived the 935 as a birthday present. The track-only machine is inspired by the 935/78 'Moby Dick' and based on the latest, 700hp 911 GT2 RS. The spectacular tribute will be available in June of 2019 and production is limited to just 77 examples. The 935 tribute is fittingly priced at Euro 701,948 and the Martini livery is available as an option instead of the standard 'Agate Grey'.
Next week, all eyes will be on Paris for the biennial Mondial de l'Automobile. Among the cars announced this week to be released at the Paris Motor Show is this Hyundai i30 Fastback N. The latest high performance 'N' model due for production, the four-door model boasts a two-litre engine that produces up to 275hp in the performance version of the car. The i30 Fastback N was given the final stamp of approval by successful Hyundai racers Thierry Neuville (WRC) and Gabriele Tarquini (WTCR).
Nissan's luxury brand Infiniti is due to reveal the Project Black S Prototype, which is a further development of the show car released in 2017. Working together with the Renault F1 team, it is now fitted with a sophisticated hybrid system similar to the ones fitted to current Grand Prix cars. Combined with the 400hp twin-turbo V6 engine, the twin-hybrid system of the Project Black S is good for a total of 571hp.
2018-09-26: Lola at 60 with the very first and last cars ...
Lola Mk1 Climax Sixty years ago, Eric Broadley built the very first of what would become a long line of hugely successful racing cars. Dubbed the Lola Mk1, Broadley had built the car for himself to race and not long after the small sports car made its debut, he scored the first victory. Production versions of the Mk1 followed and close to three dozen examples were built of that very first design. The Prototype is still around and the current owner does it justice by frequently racing it with considerable success. Its most recent outing during Lola's 60th anniversary year was at last week's Spa Six Hours and as fate would have it, the event also featured the very last Lola built; the B12/60 Mazda. This particular car was not raced until the 2013 season and as such actually debuted after Lola had already folded. One of two built, it was raced in the American Le Mans Series where its sister car won a race in 2012. Chassis B1260-HU02 could do no better than a pole position and no fewer than five second place finishes out of nine starts. It is today raced with considerable verve in the new Masters Endurance Legends series.
Another Lola in action at Spa was this very rare T390. This was the two-litre version of the T380 sports racer and was produced in 1975 only. Five cars were built and the featured example is one of only two known to have survived.
2018-09-24: Lotus and Tyrrell that starred at Monaco and new Aston Martin and Peugeot ...
Lotus 78 Cosworth After a very busy summer, it is now time to gradually take a closer look at the many great cars we captured. Today we have highlighted a pair of Formula 1 racers that starred at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. The most famous of the two is the Lotus 78. Raced during the 1977 season, it was the car that pioneered ground effect aerodynamics. The featured example was raced in period by Gunnar Nilsson and Hector Rebaque. Today it is owned by a Japanese enthusiast and fielded by Classic Team Lotus. Also on hand in the Principality was this Tyrrell 007, which we had previously had only seen in the familiar Tyrrell blue livery. It was re-painted for the current owner to the Gulf livery, it wore when it was driven by a privateer. In fact, chassis 007/4 remains as the only Grand Prix car ever to race in complete Gulf colours.
Ahead of the official launch at the Paris Motor Show, Peugeot revealed the first details of the all-electric e-Legend Concept. Equipped with a 456bhp drivetrain, the e-Legend features a striking design that has clearly been inspired by the legendary 504 Coupe.
Aston Martin have already teased the mid-engined Valkyrie successor, which has been code-named Project 003. Production is limited to 500 coupes and first deliveries are not expected until 2021.
2018-09-21: 2018 Spa Six Hours report and 200-shot gallery ...
2018 Spa Six Hours report and 200-shot gallery Last weekend, we were at the ever impressive Spa Francorchamps track for the Spa Six Hours. The main event of the meeting was the six-hour endurance race run into the evening on Saturday with a 114-strong grid that featured over a dozen Ford GT40s. In addition to the feature race, the schedule was also packed with great grids that included all of the Masters Historic Racing fields like the Masters Endurance Legends for recent prototypes and GT cars and the Formula One Championship. The Endurance Legends featured no fewer than two Peugeot 908s and also one of the glorious Lola Aston Martins. The other fields also boasted Lola T70s, Shelby Cobras and a host of Listers and Chevrons.
Run under remarkably beautiful conditions, we captured all the highlights of the Spa Six Hours in this 200-shot gallery, which serves to illustrate a concise report.
2018-09-19: New Ferrari Barchettas, Aston Martin Zagato reborn and Audi e-tron ...
Ferrari Monza SP1 At the company's 'Market Capital' day, Ferrari revealed a pair of Barchettas based on the 812 Superfast. Similar in design, the Monza SP1 and Monza SP2 hark back at the Ferrari Monza sports racers of the 1950s. Both cars are no-compromise Barchettas with the SP1 being a pure single seater while the SP2 has room for a passenger. The press release does not mention how many will be built but they are part of a new market segment dubbed 'Icone' by Ferrari.
British manufacturer Aston Martin continue to bring back legendary models from the past. After DB4 GT and DB5 James Bond continuations, it is now the DB4 GT Zagato that gets reborn. The occasion is the 100th anniversary of Zagato in 2019. The DB4 GT Zagato continuation is part of a GBP 6 million package that also includes a brand new Aston Martin DBS GT Zagato that will be delivered in 2020. Like the original DB4 GT Zagato, Aston Martin and Zagato will only built 19 examples of what is called the DBZ Zagato Collection.
Retro is certainly not a word that applies to the all-new Audi e-tron revealed in San Francisco earlier this week. It is Audi's first all-electric car and will take the fight straight to Tesla. The drivetrain in the e-tron is good for a combined 402bhp. The new Audi will be priced for a very competitive $75,000, before government incentives.
2018-09-17: First certified McLaren F1, new Huracan racer and BMW 8 Series Cabriolet ...
McLaren F1 GTR Longtail Over the last 18 months, McLaren Special Operations have meticulously restored this F1 GTR Longtail. It was delivered new to the GTC Competition team, who raced it in the FIA GT Championship and at Le Mans during the first half of 1997. It was then returned to McLaren and eventually sold on to Japan. Here it was extensively raced and eventually became the last F1 to race in a contemporary event. Chassis 25R finally came out of Japan in 2016 and has since been restored for its new owner. Along the way, it has also become the first McLaren F1 to be officially certified.
Over the weekend, Lamborghini Squadra Corse revealed the new Huracan GT3 Evo racer. As the name suggests, it is an evolution of the existing GT3 car. The Italian engineers have looked at almost every aspect of the car, which features revised suspension and power steering, and a refined aerodynamics packaged developed together with Dallara. Available as a complete car or as an upgrade package, the Huracan GT3 Evo is set to make its debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January.
Hot on the heels of the launch of the Coupe version, BMW have revealed a first glimpse of the 8-Series Cabriolet. It is pictured in camouflage and no further details were revealed but expect the first model to hit the market to be powered by the 530hp V8 of the M850i.
2018-09-13: Bonhams Goodwood Revival results and Jaguar XJR-11 ...
Jaguar XJR-11 A founding sponsor, British auctioneer Bonhams naturally was back at the Goodwood Revival to host a sale. In fact, it was the 51st Bonhams sale at a Goodwood event. In the build up to the auction, we captured many of the highlights for our illustrated result list. While some of the expensive cars did not sell, the auction still saw 66% of the car lots sold for just over GBP 15 million.
One of the top sellers was this Jaguar XJR-11 Group C car. It was the most successful of the three built and scored a victory in front of a partisan crowd at Silverstone. Following its contemporary racing career, it spent time in the TWR museum and was later raced in historic events. Chassis 490 had been slated to race in the Le Mans Classic this year but instead was consigned to the Bonhams sale where it found a new owner for just under GBP 1.2 million.
  2018-09-11: 2018 Goodwood Revival report and 270-shot gallery ...
2018 Goodwood Revival report and 270-shot gallery This weekend, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Goodwood Revival along with close to 200,000 other enthusiasts. The magical step back in time once again featured all the familiar ingredients that make it one of the most revered of all historic racing meetings. These included the two-part St. Mary's Trophy for Touring cars, the blue ribband RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration and the more recently added Kinrara Trophy with the most valuable grid of the weekend consisting of early 1960s GT cars. These, along with the other groups, provided for some top level racing from the opening Kinrara Trophy on Friday evening through to the Sussex Trophy that concluded the action Sunday afternoon. In addition to the races there were special parades celebrating the R.R.C. Walker Racing Team and the Goodwood Revival's 20th anniversary. The late Dan Gurney was also remembered each day through parade laps of his Belgian Grand Prix winning Eagle Mark 1. Further highlights included the Settrington Cup for pedal powered Austin J40s that saw future Revival stars in action.
As always, we were on hand to capture all the highlights. The result is this class-by-class 270-shot gallery that serves to illustrate a comprehensive report.
2018-09-06: 2018 Dix Mille Tours report and 280-shot gallery ...
2018 Dix Mille Tours report and 280-shot gallery This weekend, the Circuit du Castellet hosted the ninth annual Dix Mille Tours. Staged by Peter Auto, the event featured all of the French organisation's familiar grids of historic racing cars, complemented by the high speed demonstrations of the Global Endurance Legends. Among the many highlights of this year's 'Ten thousand laps', were a pair of Peugeot 905s in the Group C class, two Porsche 917/10s in CER1 and particularly colourful mix of touring cars in the HTC group.
The event was run under perfect conditions befitting the final weekend of Summer. This made for particularly lovely scenes during the Sixties' Endurance race on Saturday that ran into the evening. All this, and much, much more can be found in our 280-shot gallery, which serves to illustrate our concise report.
2018-09-04: Goodwood Revival preview with 250 GT SWB and LaFerraris headed for auction ...
Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione September is a very busy month for historic motor racing with the Goodwood Revival on the roster this weekend. The 20th anniversary will be celebrated while one of the feature races will be the Kinrara Trophy that runs into the sunset on Friday evening. Run for early 1960s GT cars, it is expected to have a grid worth around a quarter of a billion dollars. Among the cars due to line up is this Ferrari 250 GT SWB. Originally finished in an unusual burgundy colour, it was raced with considerable success by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team. Now in N.A.R.T. blue, it has been with the same family since 1986. We captured chassis 2237GT last month getting a first toe in the water around the challenging Goodwood Motor Circuit.
A set fixture of the Revival Meeting is the Bonhams Auction held on Saturday. Among the consignments is this fabulous Ford F3L, which sounds like a bargain with a GBP 500,000 - 700,000 estimate. The British auctioneer also has a pair of Ferrari's latest hypercar on offer; the LaFerrari both in Coupe and Aperta form. Sold in very limited numbers, the latter is particularly sought after and Bonhams reckon it should sell for over GBP 5 million.
With the forecasts predicting lovely weather throughout the weekend, all the ingredients are in place for a great event and there are still tickets available on the Goodwood website. As always, we will be making the magical step back in time and provide detailed coverage during the following week.
