2020-08-27: Alfa Romeo at 110 with Tipo B, 8C 2900 and Giulia SZ ...
Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 Monoposto The year 2020 will definitely not be remembered as the year that Alfa Romeo celebrated their 110th anniversary. That is nevertheless no reason not to mark the occasion by taking a closer look at three great machines produced by the Milanese company during those last 110 years.
The earliest of this trio is this exceptionally well preserved Tipo B. It was originally sold to a Spanish Marquis and then ended up in the United States where it was entered in the Indy 500 no fewer than five times. The final three times, it was fielded by Tommy Lee as the Don Lee Special, and it still wears those colours to this day. It has survived with an immaculate patina but as you can see, it is sill fully functional.
Having certainly benefited from a complete restoration is this 8C 2900B. It is the first of five long chassis fitted with Touring's spectacular Berlinetta bodywork. It spent most of its life in German and British hands, it is now owned by an American collector who managed to win best in show at Pebble in 2018 and Villa d'Este in 2019 with the fabulous 8C 2900B.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Zagato was responsible for clothing the competition versions of the Giulia and Giulietta. This SZ Coda Tronca is a great example of this collaboration. Seen in action at the recent Dix Mille Tours, chassis 00197 was campaigned in period at Le Mans and in the Targa Florio.
2020-08-25: Four Porsches that starred at the Dix Mille Tours ...
Porsche 962C As always, Porsches were very well represented at the recent Dix Mille Tours. Today, we take a look at four of the most interesting of these.
One of the most spectacular is undoubtedly this 962C, which built ahead of the 1990 season. It was raced just four times for its Swedish owner with Anthony Reid taking a victory in the Interserie race at Zeltweg during its very last outing. Following a lengthy spell in the United States, chassis 962-162 is now back in Scandinavian hands.
The most striking livery of this quartet is certainly applied to this 911 GT3 RS. It sported these patriotic colours for its appearance at the 2001 Sebring 12 Hours. Unlike most of these cars, the competition career of this GT3 RS is also quite short, which ensured it has survived unscathed.
Of an altogether earlier vintage is this 906 or Carrera 6. It was sold to British racer Mike de Udy and features an appropriate British Racing Green colour scheme. It was raced extensively for many years in period and more recently has been in French ownership. Chassis 906-129 still boasts its distinguished deep green colour.
Although regularly raced in recent years, this 356 B Abarth GTL has been re-painted to its original colours ahead of this season. The livery chosen in the recent restoration is the one used by Dutchmen Ben Pon and Carel Godin de Beaufort during their 1962 Le Mans outing.
2020-08-20: Bugattis and Miura headed for rescheduled Gooding auction ...
Bugatti Type 57 SC Atalante Coupe California-based auctioneer Gooding & Co. had planned to run their first ever European auction in London earlier this year. For obvious reasons, this had to be postponed but the Passion of a Lifetime sale has now been rescheduled to September 5th at Hampton Court Palace as part of the annual Concours of Elegance. The one-owner collection that is on offer is right at home at the new location. Today, we take a closer look at three further machines on offer. Sure to grab a lot of attention is this Bugatti Type 57 S Atalante Coupe, which was delivered new to great Bugatti enthusiast Earl Howe. Before being acquired by the vendor, it had been hidden away in a British garage for over five decades. Fortunately, the highly original condition the car was discovered was retained during the sympathetic restoration. Chassis 57502 has since been shown at select events and is estimated to sell for over £7 million.
Another beautifully patinated Bugatti in the collection is this ex-works Type 35C. Originally raced at the Targa Florio by the factory, it then had a successful racing career in privateer hands in France. Having had just three owners in the last six decades, chassis 4871 is a fully functional time-warp example.
An altogether more modern but equally special car consigned is this Miura SV. Built to custom order, it was specified with Jota-inspired upgrades like dry-sump lubrication and a limited-slip differential. Restored to the highest standard, 4878 has been regularly used for transcontinental road trips and even competed in the Tour Auto.
2020-08-18: The results are in from the RM, Bonhams and Gooding auctions ...
Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello It would have been Monterey Car week last week but for obvious reasons, all events were cancelled. The major international auction companies opted to stage online only sales instead. Today, we take a closer look at the results of three sales.
RM Sotheby's topped the week's sales with their $30.4 million Shift/Monterey auction. Of the 116 lots, 85 were sold for a sell through rate of 73%. Topping the auction was the Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello we featured last week. It sold for just under to $4.3 million, which set a new record for a car sold at an online only auction.
This record was just a week old and was previously held by this Ferrari 275 GTB, which changed hands for just over $3 million at the Gooding & Co. Geared Online sale. This 77-lot auction had a total of $14.5 in sales with a sell-through rate of 71%.
Bonhams held their annual Quail Motorcar Auction last week with cars actually available for viewing at the Petersen Musuem in LA and in Bedford Hill, New York. Of the 106 lots consigned, 69 found new owners for a total of $12.2 million. The most expensive car sold at the auction was this Porsche 718 RSK Spyder, which was offered for sale for the first time in 50 years. Making the most of this rare opportunity, the new custodian paid $2.2 million to acquire the four-cylinder engined machine.
2020-08-13: First M3 Touring, Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo and new S3 ...
BMW M3 Touring In addition to the familiar M3 Sedan, BMW will add a M3 Touring to the line-up for the first time. This may well be the most desirable of the new range of M3 and M4 models that will be launched this September. Like the other four- and two-door models, it will be powered by a straight-six, turbocharged engine that is good for 480hp or 510hp in competition trim. Although a prototype of an earlier generation M3 Touring was produced some 20 years ago, this will be the first to actual go into production.
Maserati, meanwhile, have expanded the Trofeo line-up with Ferrari V8-engined versions of the Ghibli and Quattroporte. Previously only available in the Levante SUV, the twin-turbo engine produces a hefty 580hp, all of which is sent the rear wheels through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. This is enough to give the two four-sedans a top speed of over 200mph.
Following the launch of the new latest generation A3 models, Audi have now unveiled the S3 Sedan and S3 Sportback. The two pocket rockets feature the familiar direct-injection and turbocharged two-litre engine. In its latest iteration, this well honed 'four' is good for 310hp. In good Audi tradition, this power is transferred to all four wheels courtesy of the proprietary 'quattro' all-wheel drive system.
2020-08-11: Group 5 silhouette racers from Porsche and Ferrari ...
Porsche 935 K3 Historic racing resumed at the Dix Mille Tours last month with a field that was impressive in numbers and depth. Among the most interesting cars that were raced for the first time in the Classic Endurance Racing 2 series were two Group 5 silhouette racers featured today.
Using a bare shell supplied by Porsche, the Kremer brothers produced the hugely successful 935 K3. Among the teams that ran the cars in the United States was Ted Field's Interscope Racing and the chassis fielded at Paul Ricard was the first of three ordered by the team. Liveried in the instantly recognisable black colours with white and red stripes, it was usually raced with the numbers 0 or 00. Following its career in IMSA, it was repatriated to Germany where it was campaigned in minor events. It was then in a private collection for many years and chassis 000 0010 was not raced until it reappeared in the Dix Mille Tours.
One of the few rivals for the 935 was Ferrari's 512 BB LM, which was raced predominantly by the Italian manufacturer's North American and French distributors. The latter was Pozzi of Paris, who order two for the 1979 season. The featured example was the second of these and it was raced at Daytona and Le Mans that year. Raced again at Le Mans in 1980, it never actually managed to reach the finish in period. It has had just a handful of owners since and was restored to its 1979 Le Mans colours. Chassis 26685 is now part of the stable of a Swiss historic racer.
2020-08-06: Two V12-engined Ferrari GT racers headed for RM Sotheby's auction ...
Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello In lieu of the annual Monterey sale, RM Sotheby's will stage the online-only Shift/Monterey sale. Among the consignments already announced are a pair of truly spectacular Ferrari GT racers. The most recent of the two is this 550 GTS Maranello, which is one of the ten examples built by Prodrive and ran by Care Racing. Despite being developed with privateer backing only, these V12 engined machines were successful at Le Mans, in the FIA GT Championship and also in the ALMS. The chassis consigned is the second car built and it was raced on both sides of the Atlantic. Its best results came in the FIA GT Championship with an outright victory in the 2004 Spa 24 Hours as the crowning achievement. Currently only three other examples are in private hands and this is the first time a 550 GTS Maranello has been consigned to an auction. This is reflected in the $3.85 - $4.85 million estimate.
Also turned into a racing car without help from the factory is this mighty 365 GTB/4 Daytona. It was built to Group 4 specifications by Holman & Moody for owner Kirk F. White. The V12 was modified by Traco and reportedly was among the most powerful of all Daytona competition engines. Sadly, chassis 14065 was only raced once in period, retiring from the 1972 Sebring 12 Hours. Now meticulously restored to its Sebring colours, this truly menacing machine can be yours for $2.2 - $2.75 million.
2020-08-04: New Gordon Murray Auto T.50 revealed and other news ...
Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 The highly anticipated Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 finally broke cover this evening. Designed by Gordon Murray, the T.50 is the spiritual successor to the legendary McLaren F1. Quite possibly the last of the analog supercars, it is powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated V12, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The engine has been developed specifically for the T.50 by Cosworth and produces 663hp from just 3.9 litres of displacement and revs to a staggering 12,100 rpm. The sophisticated aerodynamics package includes a fan to extract the air from the underbody much like the Murray designed Brabham BT46B Grand Prix car did. The three abreast seating position of the T.50 is a clear nod to the McLaren F1. Production will be limited to just 100 examples and the price excluding taxes is a hefty £2.36m.
Also powered by a naturally aspirated V12 is this Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 track-day online machine. The spectacular machine is equipped with the Italian manufacturer's familiar V12 engine that is good for in excess of 830 hp. Only 40 SCV12s will be built and they will be run at specific Lamborghini Squadra Corse events.
Certainly not analog is the new Maserati Ghibli Hybrid. The company's first hybrid model, it is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that receives some assistance to help boost the power to 330hp. Despite the additional weight of the hybrid system, the Ghibli Hybrid is 80kg lighter than the equivalent diesel engined car.
Ford have pushed the Mustang Mach-E concept to the limit by fitting seven motors to the car and create the Mach-E 1400. The 1400 is a reference to the power available from the all-electric drivetrain. The 1400 is designed to use on the circuit for track-day or drift events.
