2021-08-30: Competition inspired Porsches headed for auction ...
Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport As part of the annual Bernina Gran Turismo event, RM Sotheby's will hold the new St. Moritz sale next month. Among the 23 cars consigned are three mighty competition inspired Porsches. The most recent is this 911 GT2 RS Clubsport. The 44th of the limited 200 examples built, this example was finished in white with bare carbon-fibre elements. Still with delivery mileage, this track-only machine is estimated to sell for CHF 500,000 - 600,000.
Another hardcore Porsche available is this 993-generation GT2, which also boasts the track-inspired Clubsport package. This includes a full roll-cage and bucket seats. Well maintained but rarely used in recent years, this rare GT2 should sell for well over CHF 1 million.
The original competition inspired Porsche 911 road car is the Carrera RS 2.7 Touring. The fine example consigned was originally sold to Germany but then spent three decades in Japan. Now reunited with its original engine and meticulously restored, it could be yours for between CHF 450,000 and 550,000.
2021-08-26: Three Grand Prix cars and good news from Cadillac ...
Lotus 24 Climax At the recent Grand Prix de l'Age d'Or one of the races was for Grand Prix cars up to 1965. Today we take a look at three great machines from this diverse grid. The most recent of these is the Lotus 24 Climax that was raced by Jack Brabham. The then two-time World Champion campaigned the car in five Grands Prix during the first half of the 1962 as he awaited the completion of the first Brabham Grand Prix car. A fifth at the British Grand Prix was the best result. Chassis 947 was then sold to South Africa where it had an eventful career. Following a lengthy spell in the United States, it is now back in Europe and finished in Brabham Racing Organisation colours once again.
Of a slightly different era comes this Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza. It is one of two cars of the type owned by Portuguese entrant Frederico Abecassis. It eventually ended up in Brazil where it was shown in a museum for several years. Repatriated to Europe in the early 1980s, chassis 2211135 has since been part of several major collections and returned to the track this year.
Of a similar vintage is this lovely Bugatti Type 51, which was sold new to England where it was raced for several years. Later in its life, it was also part of the Nethercutt Collection and today 51148 is campaigned by its Swiss custodian.
Finally confirming the rumours, Cadillac have confirmed the construction of a new LMDh racer for the revised 2023 IMSA and FIA WEC rules. Dubbed the LMDh-V.R, it will once again feature a Dallara sourced chassis and the cars will be campaigned by current Cadillac teams Action Express Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing. Not only is the car expected to be raced in North America, the rules convergence means that an entry at Le Mans is certainly also on the cards.
2021-08-24: Rare Zonda R available for sale and first glimpse of Corvette Z06 and Fabia Rally2 ...
Pagani Zonda R Evoluzione Entrusted to RM Sotheby's Private Treaty department is this very rare Pagani Zonda R. Considered the ultimate development of the already legendary Zonda hypercar, the R was a track-only machine powered by a howling naturally aspirated V12 engine. This was initially rated at 760 hp but a further development known as the Evoluzione saw the power rise to 800 hp. The fifth Zonda R built, the example now available was subsequently updated to Evoluzione specifications at the factory. Having barely covered 1,000 km, it is the first available on the American market. RM Sotheby's gives no asking price but the privilege of acquiring the rare Zonda will not come cheaply.
During last weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, Corvette have offered a first glimpse of the upcoming high performance Z06 model. Shown in camouflage, the new top-of-the-range model should be quite spectacular once revealed. In addition to the preview, Corvette have also offered a date for that reveal; October 26th.
Originally conceived as the Fabia R5 back in 2015, the highly successful junior World Rally Car is due to be replaced in 2022. Now known as the Fabia Rally2, it will be powered by a development of the 1.6-litre engine. It has big boots to fill as the outgoing model has scored numerous of victories and was driven to nine championship titles. Between the R5, Rally2 and Rally2 Evo evolutions, Skoda produced and sold more than 400 examples of the outgoing Fabia.
  2021-08-20: All-new Nissan Z and the 1990 Le Mans pole-sitting Nissan ...
Nissan Z At a special event in New York, Nissan revealed the production of the seventh generation Z sports car yesterday. Now simply dubbed the 'Z', it is powered by a twin-turbo, three-litre V6 engine. Producing 400 bhp, it is mated as standard to a six-speed manual gearbox but customers can also specify a nine-speed automatic gearbox. In addition to the 'base' Sport specification, the new Z is also available with in the so called 'Performance' spec with revised suspension and bigger brakes. For the exterior, the Nissan designers clearly draw inspiration from the first generations of the model with the subtle cues including the shape of the grille surround and the rear lights.
This weekend, the postponed 24 Hours of Le Mans is run and with our minds still on the new Z, we have decided to highlight the Nissan that arguably achieved the Japanese company's most famous result in the event. This is the R90CK Group C racer that was driven to pole position by Mark Blundell back in 1990. The car reportedly suffered from a stuck wastegate but that enabled Blundell to complete his qualifying lap in 3:27, which was a full six seconds faster than any other car in the field. That very car is now in Swedish ownership and has been regularly raced in the Historic Group C Championship as can be seen in our 52-shot gallery.
2021-08-17: Results from the Monterey auctions with four of the top sellers ...
McLaren F1 The results are in for last week's Monterey auctions and all three international auctioneers saw strong sales. The top seller of the weekend was the virtually brand-new McLaren F1, which was offered by Gooding & Co. during the official Pebble Beach auction. It found a new owner for just under $20.5 million, which helped the California-based auctioneer exceed $107 million over the two-day sale. Another impressive sale was this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster that ticked all the boxes and exceeded the top estimate at $3.1 million.
Anglo-Canadian rival RM Sotheby's spread their auction over three days and grossed nearly $150 million with a 91% sell-through rate. One of our favourite cars in the sale was this Ferrari 268 SP, which changed hands for $7.7 million, making it the second most expensive car in the sale after this Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.
The single-day Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction saw $36 million worth of machinery change hands with a 89% sell-through rate. The striking Mercedes Benz 680 S Sports Tourer that was owned by the same family for nearly 60 years topped the Bonhams charts. For the literally once-of-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire the, the new custodian had to pay nearly $5.4 million.
2021-08-13: New Countach, NSX Type S, Valkyrie Spider and more news from Monterey ...
Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 During the car week at the Monterey Peninsula, some spectacular new machinery has broken cover. Attracting the most attention is undoubtedly the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4; a V12-engined tribute to the legendary Countach introduced 50 years ago this year. As the LPI name suggests, it also features a mild hybrid system good for a combined output of 800 hp. Production of the striking Countach LPI 800-4 is limited to just 112 examples, which is a nod to the internal name of the original Countach.
As a fitting farewell to the second generation NSX will serve this 600 bhp Type S. Production is limited to 350 examples of the first ever NSX Type S available outside of Japan.
Aston Martin used the car week to reveal the Spider version of the Valkyrie. Mechanically, it is identical to the Coupe but it features scissor doors instead of the gull-wing doors of the fixed head counterpart.
Among the other debuts this week were the Bentley Flying Spur Mulliner, the open and all-electric Audi Skysphere Concept and the Radford coach-built Lotus Type 62-2. This is a tribute to the Type 62 sports racer of the late 1960s based on the Evora.
2021-08-09: Indy Lola and Aston DB4 GTs headed for auction, limited 911 GT2 Clubsport RS ...
Lola T90 Ford Perhaps not the most valuable to cross the block on the Monterey Peninsula, this ex-Jackie Stewart Lola T90 is definitely one fo the most interesting. It is one of three T90s built for what was Lolas second attempt in the Indy 500, in 1966. Two were powered by Ford V8s and fielded for Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. It was Stewart in SL90/2 on offer with Gooding that looked set to claim the win but he lost oil pressure with just eight laps to go. Eventually, it was Hill in the now long lost sister car that won the race.
Among the many other great cars that will be offered by the major international auctioneers are a pair of Aston Martin DB4 GTs. Also offered by Gooding is chassis 0154/L. This car was sold new to Georges Filipinitti and then owned by its next custodian for 48 years. He raced the car and later used it on the road extensively. It had over 100,000 km on the odometer when it was sold to its third owner in 2010. Now fully restored, it should sell for around $3.5 million. Slightly higher valued still is the Lightweight specification 0168/L that has been consigned to the RM Sotheby's auction together with the rest of the collection from the late Paul Andrews. It was one of the star cars in his fabulous stable and has a pre-sale estimate of $4-$5 million.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Manthey Racing, Porsche have produced this limited production 911 GT2 RS Clubsport 25. This must surely be the very last 'new' 991-generation 911 built and it boasts a distinct body kit. Only 30 examples will be produced of the Clubsport 25.
For the 2022 season, Honda Performance Development produced a second evolution of the Acura GT3. Known as the Evo22, it features many subtle improvements and can also be offered with air conditioning. Thanks to latest evolution, the homologation of the NSX GT3 has been extended through to the 2024 season.
  2021-08-05: Off-road Morgan, GT2-spec Brabham and Type S NSX ...
Morgan Plus Four CX-T Before the end of the year, Morgan will expand the line-up with this Plus Four CX-T. It has been developed together with off-road specialists Rally Raid UK and production will be limited to just eight examples. Compared to the standard Plus Four, the CX-T boasts a raised suspension, a trick differential and all sorts of off-road equipment. It is clearly aimed for the Morgan enthusiast for whom driving on the road is just not quite exciting enough.
Brabham are set to enter GT2 racing with this BT63, which is due to make its competition debut at the Paul Ricard European GT2 Championship round at the start of October. Not quite homologated yet, it will compete in the invitation class but it will add some spice to the category packed mainly with Audis and Porsches. We expect further details on the BT63 a little closer to its first official outing.
Honda will bring the curtain down on the second generation NSX with a high performance Type S version. Production is limited to just 350 examples, which we assume includes the Acura badged models and crucially, it will be the first ever NSX Type S available outside of Japan. The first car will be auctioned by Mecum in their Monterey sale next week.
2021-08-02: GT40, Elan 26R and DBR9 we saw in action recently ...
Ford GT40 With historic motorsport restarting slowly, we have had the opportunity to see some cars in action that we had not seen before or not for a while. Among them is this Ford GT40, which competed in a historic race during the recent Grand Prix de l'Age d'Or for the first time in many years. It was raced in period by likes of Chris Amon and Jochen Rindt, and competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Chassis GT40P/1017 changed hands recently and is now in French ownership.
Also in action at Dijon in June was this Lotus Elan 26R. The Series 2 machine was delivered new to the United States where it was raced in SCCA events under the Lotus Southwest banner. Until 1998, it had just two owners and the more recent custodians had the Elan beautifully prepared for historic racing.
Of an altogether more newer vintage is this Aston Martin DBR9, which was campaigned last month at the Historic Racing by Peter Auto meeting at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit. It was raced extensively between 2006 and 2008 as can be seen in the 37-shot gallery in a variety of liveries. Its most recent, and only second owner decided to have DBR9/4 painted in the colourscheme used at Le Mans in 2008.
