2023-04-27: New 750S; the lightest production McLaren yet and updated Radical SR1 ...
This week, McLaren revealed the new 750S in Coupé and Spider forms. Replacing the already highly acclaimed 720S, it is 30 kg lighter and 30 hp more powerful. Among the changes are lighter seats, wheels and glass, and also changes to the exterior with a deeper front split and larger rear wing as the most obvious. The sophisticated, hydraulically linked suspension has received updated hardware and software, so should perform better still. Thanks to all the upgrades, the 750S has a top speed of 332 km/h and can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds in both Coupé and Spider forms. The order books of the new McLaren have opened but the first deliveries are not expected until the end of the year.During the last year or two, specialist sports car constructor Radical has been updating its range and the latest model to benefit is the entry-level SR1. Now know as the SR1 XXR, it boasts a hosts of upgrades that are focused on improving performance, ease of use and longevity. Among the visual changes are an LMP racer inspired fin on the rear deck and the SR1 XXR also features a new, fifth generation version of the RPE four-cylinder engine. |

In 1975, Porsche introduced the ground-breaking 911 Turbo or Typ 930. It was the direct result of Porsche's racing efforts, so it was no surprise that for the 1976 season, a 911 Turbo based Group 4 car was offered to customers. Appropriately dubbed the 934, it was campaigned extensively in international and national championships. Today, we take look at chassis 930 670 0159, which was acquired new by Georg Loos for his Tebernum-backed Gelo Racing Team. It was raced with considerable success by ace drivers like Clemens Schickentanz, Toine Hezemans and Tim Schenken. In 1977 and 1978, the next owner campaigned the car in local Dutch and Belgian events, even upgrading it to the Group 5 935 bodystyle. Restored to its original configuration, the Tebernum 934 was seen back in action at this months' Mugello Classic.The latest 911 Turbo racing car offered to customers is this 911 GT2 RS Clubsport Evo introduced at Monza last weekend. It is an evolution of the 991 II-based competition car introduced back in 2019 to compete in the re-started GT2 category. Compared to the first version, the Evo features many subtle refinements and also considerably wider wheels to keep tyre wear under control. The package is available to existing customers as a €85,000 upgrade. |

2023-04-21: Two great Ferrari competition cars coming up for auction ...
Celebrating Ferrari Friday in great style we today take a closer look at a pair competition cars that have been consigned this week to the upcoming RM Sotheby's Villa Erba auction. Headlining the sale will be this 312 PB with an estimate of €12 - €14 million. Powered by Mauro Forghieri's mighty flat-12 engine, the 312 PB was hugely successful during the early 1970s, dominating the 1972 World Sports Car Championship. With two wins, chassis 0886 contributed to that success with wins at Buenos Aires and on the Nürburgring with Ronnie Peterson and Tim Schenken at the wheel. Sold to its first private owner in January of 1975 for $40,500, it is offered from a single ownership of 13 years.Among the very first competition cars produced in Maranello is this Ferrari 166 MM Touring Barchetta. An early example of the famous 'little boat', this one was sold new to Argentina and had an eventful competition history. At one point, it was fitted with a small-block V8 and a Vignale body but it has been restored to its original configuration. Consigned from the formidable stable of an American collector, 0024M should find a new custodian for €4 - €5 million. |

Judging from this Pu+Ra HPE show car, Lancia really is on the way back. The styling of the all-electric machine was inspired by the Beta HPE fastback of the 1970s. According to the press release, the Pu+Ra HPE offers a glimpse of the product due to be launched by Lancia in the coming decade.At this weekend's Long Beach Grand Prix, Acura took the wraps off the Integra Type S. The high-performance sedan features a more powerful version of the Civic Type R four-cylinder engine and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. At this week's Shanghai Motor Show, high performance battery electric vehicles take centre stage. Daimler's luxury division, Mercedes-Maybach introduced the EQS 680 SUV. It combines a truly opulent interior with a Mercedes-AMG sourced drivetrain, good for a combined 649 bhp. Another powerful electric car launched at the Chinese show is the i7 M70 xDrive. The high performance version of the luxury sedan features a pair of electric motors that produce a combined 650 bhp. Another major debut was the Polestar 4, which is the Swedish company's first SUV. It will come with a range of drivetrain options with the 536 bhp as the most potent. BMW was also on hand with an even more powerful version of the XM, dubbed the Label Red. Not boasting a very subtle styling kit, the M-specific model is equipped with a hybrid drivetrain that can deliver up to 738 hp. |

2023-04-13: 2023 Mugello Classic Report and 200-shot gallery ...
Earlier this month, we kicked of our 2023 season with the Mugello Classic. With the Tuscan hills as a backdrop and none of the modern run-off areas, the classic vibe of the Mugello circuit was a perfect match for a historic racing meeting. Staged by Peter Auto, the Mugello Classic featured the familiar nine grids. As a result, the sports prototypes, GT racers and touring cars from a sixty-year period to the undulating Italian track. Among the many great cars out on track were quite a few that were new to the series like a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, a Nissan R91CP that had been a museum piece since its retirement in 1992 and a pair of Porsche 935s that had spent their entire lives in North America.The non-stop action included some absolutely great races with the fight for victory in the two-hour Sixties' Endurance race as one of the absolute highlights. 2023-04-11: Corvette, Aston Martin and Porsche GT racers ...
We are getting ready for the upcoming Goodwood Members' Meeting where there are special demonstrations planned dedicated to early 2000s GT1 cars and Porsche's 75th anniversary. To get you in the mood, we have taken a closer look at three machines expected to star during the weekend.First up is the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, which is one of the first two examples built. As such, it lay the foundation for the hugely successful Corvette Racing team that is scoring wins to this day. Chassis 002 finished third in class at Le Mans in 2000 and has more recently joined a French collection. Also taking part in the GT1 parade will be this Aston Martin DBR9. It was raced in period by the Bell Motorsports team, it finished second in the 2008 ALMS team standings. Raced for only a single season, chassis DBR9/5 finally returned to race track recently. It was in action last week at the Mugello Classic from which a complete report and gallery will follow. Of a similar vintage but due to line up to marque the Porsche anniversary is this 993-generation 911 GT2. It was originally owned and raced by the Portuguese racer Manuel Monteiro, who continued to own the car well into the 2010s. Now in German hands, the GT2 has been campaigned in historic events recently. |

2023-04-07: New Gordon Murray Auto T.33 Spider, wild Bronco and Genesis Concept ...
With the spectacular T.50 signed off for production last week, Gordon Murray Automotive has now taken the wraps off the T.33 Spider. The drop-top model of the 'entry-level' GMA is a mere 18 kg heavier than the coupe and retains is high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 engine. Built by Cosworth, the four-litre unit produces 606 bhp at 10,500 rpm. With just a handful of T.33 Coupe customers specifying the optional automatic gearbox, the Spider now comes with a manual six-speed XTrac only. As with the fixed-head version, production of the T.33 Spider is strictly limited to just 100 examples.The specialists at Hennessey have now worked their magic on the range-topping Bronco Raptor to create the VelociRaptor 500. As the name suggests, the twin-turbo V6 engine has been massaged to produce 500 bhp. The $28,950 upgrade also includes cosmetic changes to the exterior and interior. According to John Hennessey, the VelociRaptor 500 is the company's most agile 4x4 offering yet. Unveiled at this week's New York International Auto Show, the Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept offers a glimpse at a future fastback bodied GV80 SUV. It is the BMW X6 to Genesis' X5 and should prove popular in this market. In concept form, the GV80 Coupe comes equipped with four bucket seats. |
2023-04-04: V12-engined Ferrari competition cars ...
Ferrari is famous for its V12-engined competition cars and today we take a closer look at three great examples. The most successful of the trio is this 365 P2, which won the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring when it was a works car. The mid-engined prototype was rebuilt and sold to Garage Francorchamps. Painted yellow, it continued to be raced by Lucien Bianchi and Jean Blaton. It was later owned by Albert Uderzo of Asterix fame and part of the Maranello Rosso Collection. Recently fully restored, chassis 0828 was returned to its Garage Francorchamps configuration.The earliest is this 250 GT SWB California, which was built to full Competizione specification with high compression engine and aluminium body. It was sold new to Germany and raced with considerable success in local events. Part of the same collection since 1998, chassis 2383GT, it is now painted a striking gun-metal grey. Sold new to the French Ferrari distributor Charles Pozzi, this 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione was driven to victory in the Tour de France by Jean-Claude Andruet. It also won its class at Le Mans and was then used regularly used on the road. Still sporting its French national racing colours 15667 has also been in the same hands for 25 years. |
