2023-07-31: 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed report and 260-shot gallery ...
2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed report and 260-shot gallery Earlier this month, the Duke of Richmond & Gordon hosted the 30th anniversary edition of the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. This occasion did not pass unnoticed and other anniversaries celebrated included 75 years of Goodwood as a motorsport venue, 75 years of Lotus and NASCAR, 60 years of McLaren Racing, 50 years of the World Rally Championship and the Le Mans centenary. Taking centre stage was 75-year old German manufacturer Porsche, starring for a record-breaking fourth time on the central feature in front of Goodwood House. All these anniversaries together resulted in a truly spectacular field that included numerous outright Le Mans winners, Grand Prix icons, Can-Am championship winning cars and World Rally legends. In addition to the action on the hill there was the Cartier Style & Luxe Concours d'Elegance, while several supercars made their world debut at Goodwood.
Our photographers were on hand for three of the four scheduled days as the Saturday activities had to unfortunately be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. As can be seen in our 260-shot gallery that did not dampen the spirits. The class-by-class gallery illustrates a detailed report of all the weekend's highlights.
2023-07-27: Three great track cars from Porsche and Maserati headed for auction ...
Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder At the upcoming Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions three great track cars will cross the block. The earliest and most valuable of the trio is this Porsche 718 RS 60 with a great period racing history. Very distinct thanks to the blue accents added by the first owner, it scored twelve class wins including at the Sebring 12 Hours. Subsequently owned by several major collectors, 718-060 has a $5.5 - $6.5 million estimate.
Another Porsche racer consigned to the two-day auction is this 911 Carrera RSR 3.0; the third to last built. It was bought new by Vasek Polak, who only fielded the car once in period. The legendary Porsche dealer would go on to own the 911 racer until his death in 1998 and it was subsequently restored for use in historic race meetings. Offered with an entry for the 2023 Rennsport Reunion, chassis 911 560 9120 could sell for over $2 million.
Although designed for use on track, this MC12 Corsa has yet to see much action. It is one of twelve track-day only examples produced to commemorate the MC12 GT1 racers winning the 2005 Spa 24 Hours. Finished in 'Victory Blue' with American racing stripes, the beautifully preserved MC12 Corsa should change hands for over $2.5 million.
2023-07-25: 2023 Le Mans Classic report 210-shot gallery ...
2023 Le Mans Classic report 210-shot gallery The 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary celebrations had a fitting finale with the eleventh edition of the Le Mans Classic earlier this month. Organised for the first time during an even year, especially for the Le Mans centenary, the event was bigger and better than ever before. There was virtually non-stop action from Friday morning through to the finish on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the six grids covering the period from 1923 through to 1981, there were also support races for early Bentleys, air-cooled Porsches, Group C and the Endurance Racing Legends. The latter was particularly impressive with a Toyota GT-One, two Porsche 911 GT1s, four Ferrari 550 Maranellos and a McLaren F1 GTR all going head-to-head in the oversubscribed field. There were several outright Le Mans winners that competed in the event and there was also a parade with many more important Le Mans cars to further warm up the crowd.
Having never missed an edition of the Le Mans Classic, we were on hand from start to finish and worked through the night to produce a class-by-class 210-shot gallery and a full report of the eleventh running of the event.
2023-07-21: Ferrari Friday with three iconic examples headed for the Monterey auctions ...
Ferrari 412 P It is quite the Ferrari Friday today as all three international auction houses announced headlining Ferraris for the upcoming Monterey auctions. The most valuable of the trio is this achingly beautiful Ferrari 412 P to be offered by Bonhams in their Quail Lodge sale. One of two built for the 1967 World Sports Car Championship, this four-litre engined machine was sold new to Maranello Concessionaires and still wears the team's striking colours today. Raced extensively in period, it was later owned by many prominent collectors before joining the current stable in 2005. Arguably the most important Ferrari sports car offered during the last five years, 0854 should command a hefty eight-figure bid to pry it away from the current custodian.
It should be closely matched by this 250 LM, which headlines the RM Sotheby's Monterey sale. Raced extensively in period, including appearances at Daytona and Le Mans, it has more recently been meticulously restored and fully Ferrari Classiche certified. Having had just two owners in the last quarter of a century, 6053 has a pre-sale estimate of $18 - $20 million.
The Gooding Pebble Beach Auctions includes this highly original 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. Sold new to an Italian industrialist, it has been cherished throughout its life by its four owners. Beautifully patinated, the metallic grey 250 GT SWB has covered 53,000 km from new. An original example is exceedingly rare and the estimate of $9 - $11 million for 3507GT reflects this.
2023-07-18: Iconic Jaguars headed for RM Monterey sale ...
Jaguar XKSS Anglo-Canadian auctioneer RM Sotheby's have added a pair of iconic Jaguars to the lot list for the upcoming Monterey Sale. The absolute headliner is this XKSS, which has a pre-sale estimate of $12 - $14 million. Built on the chassis originally designated XKD 564, it was delivered new to the United States. Never completely restored, it has only had three owners since 1976. Among the car's former custodians were Anthony Bamford and Campbell McLaren. Chassis XKSS 707 is only the second XKSS to be offered at auction in the last decade.
Of a slightly earlier vintage is this C-Type. Also sold new to the the United States, it was extensively raced during its early years. During the late 1980s, it was meticulously restored by marque expert John Pearson. Since then, it has been regularly used in events like the Mille Miglia retrospective. Offered from a single ownership of three decades, XKC 024 has a pre-sale estimate of $3.5 - $4.25 million.
2023-07-16: New Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and more ...
Ferrari KC23 Owing to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it has been a busy news week. Ferrari announced the latest bespoke project. Based on the 488 GT3 Evo competition car, this track-only machine is dubbed the KC23. Designed in-house by Flavio Manzoni, it can be run with and without a massive rear wing.
Celebrating the company's 75th anniversary in style, Porsche revealed the Vision 357 Speedster. Visually a tribute to the original Porsche 356, it is equipped with a sophisticated all-electric drivetrain.
Inspired by the one-off Victor, Aston Martin has now revealed a limited run of the similarly styled Valour. In addition to the striking design, it also stands out due to the fact that it combines a V12 engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. All 110 examples due to be built have already been spoken for.
Lamborghini will enter top-level prototype racing with the SC63. Due to compete on both sides of the Atlantic, it is built to the IMSA LMDh regulations. As such, it combines a proprietary twin-turbo V8 engine with an off-the-shelve Bosch hybrid system.
Caterham is stepping up its game with the all-electric Project V. The striking 2+1 Coupe offers a preview of a production model due to arrive late in 2025 or early in 2026. It was designed by Anthony Jannarelly and constructed with help from Italdesign.
A classic British sports car firm that might make a return is Triumph. With the blessing of BMW, who own the rights to the name, British specialist company Makkina unveiled this Triumph TR25 earlier in the week. The BMW connection runs deeper than the name alone as it is based on i3s underpinnings.
2023-07-11: Bonhams FoS preview with unique Koenigsegg, DB4 GT and Group B Audi ...
Koenigsegg CCGT A partner of the Goodwood Festival of Speed from the start, Bonhams will once again host this weekend's official sale. Headlining the packed catalog is this one-off Koenigsegg CCGT, which made one of its rare period public appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in 2007. It was built to compete in GT1 racing but a rule change ended the program before the CCGT ever turned a wheel in anger. Since, it has been beautifully preserved by its single private owner. Bonhams estimate, the unique Koenigsegg will sell for £3 - £4 million.
Another big ticket item in the sale is this £2.2 - £2.6 million Aston Martin DB4 GT. A factory demonstrator, it also starred in a movie as Peter Sellers' getaway car. Sellers is also believed to have owned the car, which was uprated by the factory with a four-litre engine in period. Owned by the same collector since 2004, the DB4 GT should make some headlines.
One of just 20 works cars, this Audi Sport Quattro was campaigned successfully for Audi UK by Hannu Mikkola. The Group B rally car also famously featured in several videos and books. In single ownership since 2003, the Sport Quattro has been carefully restored and could be yours for £1.2 - £1.4 million.
  2023-07-07: Air-cooled Porsche 911s due to cross RM Sotheby's block ...
Porsche 911 GT2 R This week, RM Sotheby's will host a pair of auctions with cars from the Carrera Collection. Dedicated mainly to Porsches, the stable is actually located in two countries so there will be a sale in Switzerland today and then in Italy on Wednesday. Included in the Swiss part of the auction are three high-performance 993-generation Porsche 911s. Among them is this 911 GT2 R, which has had an extensive and eventful competition career. Raced in the 1999 and 2000 FIA GT Championship by Seikel Motorsport, it was later restored in Italy. Chassis ZTS393074 has a CHF 350,000 - 450,000 estimate.
Considered the ultimate air-cooled, naturally Porsche 911 for the road is the Carrera RS 3.8 of which a yellow example has been consigned. The car was delivered new to Switzerland and has remained there ever since. For those customers that felt the RS 3.8 was not hardcore enough, Porsche also produced a limited run of the Clubsport version. Lighter still, it also boasted a tall rear wing. The example on offer from the Carrera Collection was delivered new to Germany and has been part of this stable since 2009.
2023-07-05: RM Sotheby's Monterey preview with Ferraris and D-Type ...
Ferrari 275 GTB/4 The Monterey car week is little over a month away and the auction companies have started releasing the first consignments. Among them is RM Sotheby's, who will stage a three-day sale in down town Monterey. An early headliner is this Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which was formerly owned by Steve McQueen. He had the car customised and used it on the road regularly. Later in its life, it was modified to NART Spyder configuration but it has more recently been restored to its original configuration with Ferrari Classiche. Offered from the estate of British collector David Moores, 10621 has a pre-sale estimate of $5 - $7 million.
Making headlines is the 'Lost and Found' Ferrari collection of Robert Medlin, which was consigned in its entirety at no reserve. While some cars were damaged in a hurricane, this 512 BB Competizione survived unscathed. One of only four built for the 1978 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it has been owned by Medlin for 42 years. Untouched since then, 24131 does require a complete recommissioning to get it back on the race track. RM Sotheby's nevertheless expects it to find a new owner for over $1.5 million.
Another rarely seen machine in the sale is this Jaguar D-Type. Raced extensively in period, it has been in the same ownership since 2001. Having benefited from a restoration at the hands of marque experts John and Gary Pearson during the 1990s, the XKD 546 is presented in lovely condition. Once owned by Nicholas Cage, the next owner will need to be willing to pay at least $4.5 million for the privilege of being only the second custodian this century.
