2023-11-30: Great Porsches and Ferrari headed for Gooding auction ...
Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight Californian auctioneer Gooding has revived the online-only Geared Online auctions for a December edition. Headlining the sale that will open for bidding on December 4th, is this Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight. It is one of just four 'Lightweight' Carrera RS 2.7s that was finished in the legendary Gulf blue. Sold new to Sweden, 911 360 0269 is now estimated to sell for $1.3 million.
Also available are a pair of Porsche Speedsters. The earliest of the two is this 356 A Speedster, which has survived in remarkably original condition. Apart from a repaint early in its life, it is virtually untouched. An ideal candidate for a complete restoration, chassis 83955 should sell for around $300,000. A much more recent Speedster is this 991-generation 911 Speedster. Fitted with the Heritage Design Package, it has barely been used and has just 52 miles on the odometer.
In the same ownership for the first 34 years of its life, this Ferrari 365 GTC/4 will also cross the virtual block this week. It was originally painted in metallic brown with a beige interior. Its most recent owner has consigned the V12-engined GT to the sale after acquiring it during a Gooding sale back in 2010.
2023-11-27: White-only Porsches headed for auction, new Panamera and Callum Skye ...
All-white Porsche auction For a dedicated auction, RM Sotheby's have consigned the Houston, Texas based White Collection. Available during the sale this weekend are well over 500 lots of automobilia and 62 cars, most of which are white Porsches. Headlining the sale is this 918 Spyder, which was built specifically for the collection. It is equipped with high-performance Weissach Package and was finished in a paint-to-sample Grand Prix White. The 918 Spyder is expected to sell for upwards of $3 million. Among the rarest 911s available is this 964-generation Carrera RSR 3.8. It was one of just two examples of this competition Porsche to be fitted with a full interior. Both were ordered by the same customer and have survived in as-new condition. Unlike the sister car, which sold last weekend for $2.1 million, this RSR 3.8 Strassenversion is in full running order and is estimated to find a new custodian for $2 - $2.5 million. Another beautifully preserved 911 in the sale is this $2.25 - $2.75 million Carrera RS 3.0.
Over the weekend, Porsche introduced the third generation Panamera. Topping the range at the market launch in 2024 is the Turbo E-Hybrid. Combining a twin-turbo V8 and an electric motor, it has a maximum system output of 670 bhp.
Former Jaguar and Aston Martin designer Ian Callum has branched out on his own and his Callum company introduced this striking Skye off-roader. The compact all-electric machine weighs just 1,150 kg and should be able to take on all terrains. The production examples should be available to customers in the Spring of 2024.
2023-11-23: New Pagani Imola Roadster and RM Sotheby's Munich preview ...
Pagani Imola Roadster Pagani's Grandi Complicazioni department has created another limited production model based on the Huayra; the Imola Roadster. This high-performance, track-ready version combines a striking roadster body with an 838 bhp version of the Mercedes-AMG sourced V12 engine. Production of the Imola Roadster is limited to just eight examples.
At Motorworld Munich, RM Sotheby's will host their annual auction in the Bavarian city. The sale is headlined by a pair of Ferraris. Estimated to sell for €3 - €3.5 million is this Enzo. It was sold new to an enthusiast in Bologna. It was more recently sold to the United Kingdom and was fully Ferrari Classiche certified. Another lovely Ferrari consigned is this 365 GTS/4 Daytona. Although painted red at some point, it was originally finished in a metallic brown with a matching interior and has been fortunately re-finished accordingly. Also on offer are several recent high performance machines. Among them is this virtually brand-new Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign. Placed in storage immediately after being completed, it has covered just 119 miles. With just 33 kilometres on the odometer, this BMW 3.0 CSL is also barely used. The 44th of 50 produced, it had been originally delivered to a French owner and will be looking for a second custodian at BMW's hometown.
2023-11-21: Lotus at 75 with turbine F1 and iconic sports cars, and new Ginetta GT4 racer ...
Lotus 56B Pratt & Whitney Throughout 2023, Lotus celebrated the company's 75th anniversary. To mark this occasion, we have taken a closer look at three iconic Lotus competition cars, which we have seen in action this year. The rarest and most spectacular of the trio is the unique Type 56B. Built for the 1971 Formula 1 World Championship, it is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney turbine engine and features all-wheel drive. Raced seven times that year, it especially excelled in the wet. Set aside at the end of 1971, the sole Type 56B has survived in highly original condition and was only recently returned to full running order by Classic Team Lotus. It was demonstrated at the Goodwood Revival as part of the Lotus 75 celebrations.
Also out on track at Goodwood was this particularly striking Type 15. Sold new to United States, this chassis was raced with considerable success, wearing a very distinct orange and white colour scheme. Used on the road for many years, chassis 614 has been with the same owner since 1999.
A few weeks later, we saw this Climax-engined Type 19 at the Estoril Classics. Originally campaigned by a talented Canadian racer, it is today part of a Danish stable of Lotus competition cars. At Estoril, 959 was driven to victory in the Fifties' Legends race.
In time for the 2024 season, Ginetta have rolled out the 'Evo' version of the very accomplished G56 GT4 racer. Once again powered by a naturally aspirated V8 engine, it features improved cooling, larger wheels and many detail changes aimed to improve performance. During the first year, Ginetta intend to produce 18 examples of the G56 GT4 Evo.
2023-11-16: Ferraris making auction headlines with RM Sotheby's ...
Ferrari F40 GT It is an early Ferrari Friday as we have a closer look at four examples from the storied Italian manufacturer that will cross the block on November 17 at the RM Sotheby's Las Vegas sale.
The earliest of this quartet is this Ferrari F40 GT, which was collected by the first owner from the factory. He had it prepared to GT specification and campaigned it in the Italian Championship with great success. After it was restored to road spec, it was more recently brought back to F40 GT guise but remains road legal.
RM Sotheby's have also consigned both a LaFerrari Coupe and the rarer still LaFerrari Aperta. Both cars have barely been used and should sell for over $4 million.
Effectively brand-new and offered without reserve is this 812 Competizione, which was completed in March of 2022. Finished in flat-black with a yellow stripe, it has a $1.65 - $1.95 million.
The Anglo-Canadian auctioneer also made headlines earlier this week when this Ferrari 330 GTO sold at a startling $51.7 million at an auction in New York. Although this was not quite the number speculated by some before the sale, it is still a new world record for a Ferrari sold at an auction.
2023-11-13: McLaren Monday with F1 GTR, Solus GT and Elva and MP4-21 headed for auction ...
McLaren F1 GTR Throughout the year, McLaren has been celebrated the company's 60th anniversary. As a result, we have seen some great examples at the events we visited. One of the absolute highlights was this F1 GTR, which was raced at the Le Mans Classic by none other than Yannick Dalmas. One of the most famous GTRs, it was campaigned in Harrods colours in period. In more recent years, it was regularly demonstrated at a variety of events and it was particularly nice to see 06R be driven in anger once more.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the British manufacturer celebrated their anniversary in style with this Solus GT setting the fastest time of the Shootout. Driven by Marvin Kirchhöfer, the example used for the run was the first validation prototype of the track-day special.
At the upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Bonhams will host a very exclusive On The Grid auction. Among the headliners is this McLaren Elva, which has been consigned by its first owner; none other than Fernando Alonso. Also due to cross the block is this MP4-21 Mercedes, which was raced during the 2006 season by Kimi Räikönen. His best result with this car was a second in Australia. Fully restored and in private hands, MP4-21A-02 should sell for over $2.5 million.
2023-11-09: Inside the MAUTO - The Italian National Automobile Museum ...
MAUTO - The Italian National Automobile Museum During our travels to events all around the world, we sometimes get the chance to visit the best automotive museums. This year, we stopped in Turin to take a closer look at the MAUTO or Italian National Motor Museum. This stunning collection was originally started by Senator Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffa in 1933, so it is 90 years old this year. During this period only two cars were actually acquired with the rest donated by private individuals and manufacturers. The collection is nevertheless second to none and includes a fabulous selection of pioneer automobiles and highly original competition cars like a Mercedes-Benz W196, the Maserati 250F prototype and the Fiat that won the 1907 French Grand Prix. During our visit, there were also special displays celebrating the Gino Macaluso Foundation rally car collection and one honouring the diverse machines produced by Renzo Rivolta's ISO company.
We have chronicled the history of the MAUTO in a detailed report, which is illustrated by a 70-shot gallery.
2023-11-06: Three iconic Mercedes-Benz machines headed for auction ...
Mercedes-Benz W04 We continue our coverage op the remarkable RM Sotheby's Las Vegas auction that will be held on the eve of the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix. Fittingly, one of the absolute headliners is this Mercedes-Benz W04 Formula 1 cars. Raced during the 2013 season, the W04 was a first sign of things to come. It was the first season that Lewis Hamilton raced for the team, and he used this very W04 to score his maiden win for Mercedes-Benz. It is understood to be the only one of its type in private hands and thanks to being a very significant car in Hamilton's illustrious career, it is estimated to sell for over $10 million.
Joining the W04 at the top of the estimate table are two other, closely related, Mercedes-Benz machines. Slapped with a $10.5 - $13 million target is this CLK GTR Roadster. One of just six built on surplus chassis, this example has barely been used, having covered just 170 km in the last 21 years. Having been on static display, the CLK GTR Roadster will require a full recommission to get back on the road.
Underlining the premium commanded by the rare Roadster version is the CLK GTR Coupe also consigned. Its new owner should bid in the region of $8 - $9 million for the CLK GTR that starred in the famous 'Ultimate Group Test' video alongside a McLaren F1 and a Porsche 911 GT1.
2023-11-02: Turbo Thursday with four mighty Porsches ...
Porsche 962C To celebrate Turbo Thursday, we have taken a closer look at four Porsches powered by forced induction engines. The most spectacular is this 962C, sold new to Team Schuppan in May of 1989. It was the first customer car to be fitted with water-cooled heads and the latest Bosch Motronic engine management system. Chassis 962-143 was raced at Le Mans by Will Hoy, Jean Alesi and Dominic Dobson. The latter was reunited with the car at this year's Le Mans Classic, where he shared it with the current, German owner.
As part of the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, RM Sotheby's will host a very exclusive, 38-lot auction. Among the consignments are the last match shirt worn by Tom Brady, estimated to sell for over $1.5 million, but also several turbocharged Porsches. Among them is this 959 'Komfort', which was originally sold to a Porsche executive living in Italy. It was one of just 31 finished in this striking metallic grey. Offered by an Australian collector, the 959 has a $1.65 - $1.85 million estimate. Also consigned are a pair of limited production 964-generation 911s. Built to special order is this Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 S Flachbau. It is one of 76 'slant nose' 911 Turbos built between December of 1993 and December of 1994. Rarer still is this 911 Turbo 3.6 S 'Package' of which just 17 were built during the same period. They had an identical mechanical specification as the Flachbau but boasted conventional headlights. Both 964 Porsches are estimated to sell for over $1 million.
