2025-02-27: RM Sothebys Miami preview with unique Corvette racer and more ...
As part of the Moda Miami event this weekend, RM Sotheby's will host a two-day auction. Today, nine lots from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum will cross the block. Among them is this unique Chevrolet Corvette SS. Also known as Project XP-64, it is a one-off racing car built ahead of the 1957 season. A pet project of Zora Arkus-Duntov, it was raced at the Sebring 12 Hours and was readied for an entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans when the American Manufacturer Association decided to suspend all motorsports activity. Arkus-Duntov personally saw to it that XP-64 was saved from the crusher and from 1967 onwards, it has been part of the Indy Museum collection.Another outlier in the collection now offered for sale is this Benetton B191 Cosworth. The B191 is famously the first Benetton raced by Michael Schumacher when he joined the team late in 1991. Chassis B191-08 actually did not see action until the opening round of the 1992 season as the new car was late in arriving. It was raced by Schumacher to fourth in South Africa and then entered twice for Martin Brundle until it was replaced by the new B192. Retained by Benetton until 2000, it was eventually sold with the 1993 livery it still wears to this day. The second day of the auction is headlined by this formidable Duesenberg J Murphy Disappearing Top Drophead Coupe. Originally sold in the Chicago area, it famously was part of the Pacific Auto Rental fleet for decades. As a result it regularly starred in movies and television shows. Later part of several prominent collections, 2414 J-395 benefits from a full restoration at the hands of marque expert Brian Joseph. |
2025-02-24: Ex-Senna Lotus 97T, and new Mercedes and Aston Martin Grand Prix cars ...
In 2025, it is forty years since Ayrton Senna scored his maiden Grand Prix win with the Lotus 97T Renault. Designed by Gérard Ducarouge and powered by a twin-turbo Renault engine, the 1985 Lotus kicked off a brief turn of fortune for the Team Lotus effort. Between Ayrton Senna and Elio de Angelis, the 97T scored three Grand Prix victories. At the upcoming Goodwood Members' Meeting, the 40th anniversary of the historic victory will be celebrated with demonstration runs of the very 97T/2 on Saturday and Sunday. On Wednesday, the pre-season testing for the upcoming World Championship will kick off. Among the new cars due to take part is the Mercedes-AMG W16 E Performance revealed today. It marks the first time in over a decade that Lewis Hamilton is not part of the driver line-up. His place alongside George Russell will be taken by the very young Kimi Antonelli. The W16 will be joined in Qatar by the Aston Martin AMR25, which features the same drivetrain and rear-end as the Mercedes. Ahead of the official debut in May, Alpine released a first glimpse of the A390 production car. The compact SUV will be the first all-electric model produced by the Dieppe-based specialist manufacturer. |

2025-02-19: New Ferrari Grand Prix car and BMW prototype ...
At a special event in London to mark the 75th anniversary of Formula 1, the liveries of all 2025 Grand Prix cars were revealed. Ferrari also used the opportunity to debut the SF-25, which will be raced by Charles Leclerc and high-profile new signing Lewis Hamilton. A further development of the SF-24 that came achingly close to winning the constructor's trophy in 2024. The most significant change was the switch from pull-rod to push-rod front suspension for optimised aerodynamics. The two other teams using the Ferrari power unit also took the wraps off their actual cars. The Haas VF-25 was given a shakedown already. It is the first time that the American team is sufficiently funded to reach the budget cap, so there will be no excuses if the VF-25 does not perform. Still very much an interim car, the C45 will be last Grand Prix using the Sauber name before Audi's complete take-over in 2026.As a preview for the upcoming all-electric M3, BMW have created the Vision Driving Experience. According to BMW, the Vision Driving Experience showcases driving pleasure up to the physical limits. Based on the Neue Klasse, is equipped with an electric drivetrain that is capable of producing a mesmerising 17,990 Nm of torque. |
2025-02-17: Gooding Amelia Island Auctions preview ....
Californian auctioneer Gooding have published the full Amelia Island Auctions catalog. The two-day sale is headlined by this Ferrari 375 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta, which is offered from over 50 years of single ownership. The very last 375 MM, it was built to special order for a prominent American, who won his class at the 1956 Pebble Beach road races. Chassis 0472AM is now offered from the Fred Leydorf collection with a $8 - $10 million estimate. Offered from the same stable is this very rare Porsche 356 A 1600 GS/GT Carrera Speedster. It is one of just 14 Speedsters built in 1959 that combined the hot GS/GT engine with a full aluminium body. Acquired by an American serviceman, it was raced in Europe when new before it was shipped back to the United States. Restored over many years, 84939 should sell for around $1 million. Another 356 consigned from the Leydorf collection is this 356 B 1600 Roadster. It is still finished in the unusual shade of Fjord Green. One of our favourite cars in the sale is this Nissan 300ZX IMSA. One of eight cars built and raced by Clayton Cunningham Racing, it was campaigned with considerable success between 1990 and 1992 by the likes of John Morton and Steve Millen. Offered by only the second private owner, 002 has been restored to full running order. |

2025-02-14: New-for-2025 Grand Prix cars, Valkyrie LMH specs and Blazer EV.R prototype ...
Celebrating the 75th anniversary of what is considered the start of Formula 1, a special event will be staged next week where the liveries for all eleven new Grand Prix cars will be revealed. On display will not necessarily be the actual new cars, one of which was seen out testing at Silverstone today: the Williams FW47 Mercedes. The Grove-based team will be looking to continue the upward trajectory with the new FW47, which will be shared by new signing Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.Yesterday, McLaren was also already out testing with the new MCL39 Mercedes. Like the Williams, it was run in a camouflage style livery, not to spoil the surprise for the London event. Aston Martin did showcase the livery of the Valkyrie LMH, which is set to compete in the FIA WEC and the IMSA series shortly. Along with renders showcasing the new colours of the Heart of Racing team, Aston Martin also revealed the full specifications of the V12-engined machine. Ahead of this weekend's Daytona 500, Chevrolet took the wraps off the Blazer EV.R NASCAR Prototype. As the name suggests, it is a Blazer EV-based competition car to be potentially be used in NASCAR events. It is powered by three electric motors that can produce a combined 1,300 bhp of power. |
2025-02-11: 2025 Retromobile report and 240-shot gallery ...
The 2025 season kicked off in great style with the 49th edition of the Retromobile show in Paris. The annual event is as much a car show as it is a social event with enthusiasts gathering from all around the world. As has become traditional, the major dealers stole the show but there were gems on display on the many stands put up by the enthusiast clubs, manufacturers and other vendors. During this year's show the 70th anniversary of the Citroën DS took centre stage. Among the many other highlights were a pair of McLaren F1s, a nice array of Ferrari Grand Prix cars and iconic endurance racers from the 1950s through to the present day. In addition to the show, there were also three major auctions, staged by RM Sotheby's, Bonhams and Artcurial. Our photographers were at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre during the opening two days of the show. The result of their labour is this 240-shot gallery that serves to illustrate a concise report. |

2025-02-07: Ferrari 250 LMs star in Paris during Retromobile week ...
During the opening days of the 2025 Retromobile Show in Paris, Ferrari 250 LMs have made headlines. The first 250 LM to make waves was chassis 6053, which won the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award for 2024 on Monday evening. This makes this Ferrari quite literally the best of the best as all the nominees had won the top award at a major show during the last year. In the case of 6053, this was at the Cavallino Classic little over a year ago. The car had a colourful competition history, which included appearances at the Daytona 24 Hours and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. During the last three decades, it has had just two owners and has only rarely been shown.Making an even bigger headline was chassis 5893, which sold at the RM Sotheby's Paris sale for close to €35 million. This was for good reason as it was the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans winning example that was offered for sale for the first time in five decades. During that period, it took pride of place in the Indy Motor Speedway Hall of Fame museum and until recently was the last Ferrari to win Le Mans outright. Needless to say, 5893 was the star of the €66 million sale, which was spread over two days. The first day was dedicated to the 73-lot 'Curated Collection' assembled by a Belgian enthusiast and now offered at no reserve. We have assembled the results, which are illustrated by a 60-shot gallery. The Retromobile Show itself is still open through to Sunday and we will follow up with a detailed report from our visit in the coming days. |
2025-02-03: Record breaking Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow and 1950s sports cars ...
History was made this weekend in Stuttgart as RM Sotheby's sold this Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner for a startling €51 million. Offered on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, it became the most expensive Grand Prix car ever auctioned and the second most expensive car to cross an auction block after the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that found a new owner with RM Sotheby's for €135 million. Somewhat more affordable 1950s machines have been consigned to the upcoming Gooding & Co. Amelia Island sale. Our favourite is this Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica, which was driven to victory in the very first Sebring 12 Hours. The Bristol-powered machine was placed in longterm storage during the late 1950s and was long believed to have been lost. Chassis 421/100/160 was fortunately still very much alive and was recently restored by marque expert Patrick Blakeney-Edwards. Hailing from Italy are these very rare Cisitalia 202 SC Stabilimenti Farina Cabriolet and the one-off Siata 208 CS Vignale Coupe that will also be offered by the Californian auctioneer in Florida. Offered as a private treaty by RM Sotheby's is this Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder. It was originally sold to a French privateer racer together with a sister car that was raced by his friend. Finished in a bright shade of French Racing Blue, 2065 had a pretty accomplished racing career until it was returned to the factory in 1957. It was restored in more recent years and used regularly in the Mille Miglia retrospective. |
